An Admonition

First and foremost to myself, but also to all who wish to think constructively about how to rebuild the Church. God gave us our intellect and reason to put them to use, and use them we must. But it is possible to get so caught up in the life of the mind, thinking, strategising, imagining, daydreaming, that we forget the heart and the soul.

Our first task, always, is to look to how we love God and our neighbour in our own situation. To paraphrase St. Paul, all the rest is useless without Love.

So before anything else, we have to remember to pray, raising our hearts and minds to God so as to be touched by Him, to be filled with His transforming Grace. We must remember the importance of fasting, the grace it brings and the discipline it teaches. We must remember the strength that can only be found in the Sacraments, most especially the forgiveness of sins in Confession and the person of Jesus in the Eucharist. We must remember the works of mercy towards those suffering in body and those suffering in heart, in mind, in soul. We must cultivate Faith, and Hope.

And we must practice Love.

And then, remembering all of the above, by all means let us use our heads and try and think our way out of this situation, an ear always ready to listen to the Holy Spirit.
